This year marked a significant milestone for the UF College of Nursing: Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the White Coat Ceremony in its history. This special ceremony honors nursing students’ transition from preclinical studies to clinical practice, a pivotal step in their journey to becoming dedicated health care professionals.

The Gator Nursing students celebrated this milestone with keynote speaker Shakira Henderson, PhD, DNP, MS, MPH, EMBA, IBCLC, RNC-NIC, dean of the UF College of Nursing and system chief nurse executive at UF Health. Since joining the College of Nursing as the sixth dean in January, Henderson has demonstrated unwavering commitment to advancing the college’s mission. During her keynote presentation — her first as dean — she enthusiastically shared tips and motivation, and praised the students for their upcoming achievements, highlighting the importance of compassionate, patient-centered care in nursing practice.

The White Coat Ceremony holds a unique place in nursing’s tradition. This ceremony serves as a commitment to the core values of nursing. Originating as part of a national movement, the ceremony emphasizes the dedication to humanistic, patient-centered care that is essential in health care. As students don their white coats, they pledge to uphold these values throughout their careers. The 10-year anniversary allows the college’s students and faculty to reflect on the countless others who have walked this path before, each committed to making a difference in the lives of their patients.
