Summer 2024 | Alumni Council President’s Message
Alumni Council President Ashley-Marie Mendez shares her last message as president.
Dear Gator Nursing Alumni,

It’s summer here in the Swamp. I am feeling nostalgic as I write my final message as your Alumni Council president. It’s been a fantastic journey filled with inspiration and connection.
Our summer started with a bang at the Gator Nurse Gathering in Jacksonville! With her innovative leadership, Dean Shakira Henderson shared her exciting vision for the Jacksonville and Gainesville College of Nursing campuses. Her ideas are not just refreshing—they’re exactly what we need to propel our college into a new era of excellence in nursing education.
The spring Pinning Ceremony was a significant milestone, with over 1,000 family and friends celebrating 130 new graduates. It was Dean Henderson’s first Pinning Ceremony, where she reinforced our graduates’ lifelong bond with Gator Nursing. Also, congratulations to Neil McFarlane, our 2024 Alumnus of the Year, whose dedication is inspirational.
And speaking of celebrations, you won’t want to miss this year’s Reunion Weekend Tailgate on Saturday, Sept. 14! It will be a fantastic day filled with Gator spirit, good food, and great company at the Harrell Medical Education Building in Gainesville. It’s the perfect opportunity to reconnect, reminisce, and make new memories with fellow alumni. Register for the tailgate and for tickets to see the Gator football vs. Texas A&M. I can’t wait to see you there.
As I pass the torch to the incredibly capable Dr. Kim Curry this September, I’m optimistic about the future. With her leadership and Dean Henderson’s innovative approach, I am confident that our Gator Nursing family will soar to new heights. I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished together and excited for what the future holds under their guidance.
Thank you for your support and enthusiasm during my tenure. Serving you has been an honor. Here’s to a future filled with success, connection, and unwavering Gator Nurse pride!
See you at the tailgate — let’s make it a reunion to remember!
Warm gratitude,
Ashley-Marie Mendez (BSN 2014, DNP 2024)
