2024 Grand Guard Celebration
The Class of 1973 celebrated 50 years!
In November, BSN Class of 1973 Gator Nursing alumni David Penoyer, Janice Unwin and Alice Hetzer gathered for a memorable weekend as part of the University of Florida Alumni Association’s Grand Guard Society celebration. The Grand Guard Society, honoring Gators who graduated 50 years ago, welcomed a new class during the reunion weekend, bringing together approximately 1,000 living members to date.
The Class of 1973 experienced an exciting weekend back on campus, starting with a lunch at the College of Nursing with Gator Nurse Ambassadors, former Interim Dean Debra Lyon and professors emeriti Dr. Jo Snider and Jodi Irving. The activities included a simulation lab demonstration, a cocktail reception at the Herbert Wertheim Laboratory for Engineering Excellence, a breakfast of memories at Emerson Alumni Hall, and a campus tour, followed by a lunch at the College of Design, Construction and Planning. The highlight was a night of dinner and dancing at the Florida Gym, featuring speakers sharing nostalgic moments and classic 1970s tunes. The weekend culminated in the induction ceremony at the University Auditorium, where the Class of 1973 received their Grand Guard medallions, donned in orange and blue regalia.
