Catching up with UF College of Nursing alumni.
Vivian Filer (BSN 1972) was honored with the 2022 Sarah Matheson Award by the Matheson Museum for her dedication to “caring about equality, justice, health care, preserving the history of Alachua County and her passion for Black culture in History.”
Tami L. Thomas (BSN 1996, MSN 1998, PhD 2006) was acknowledged for the impact her research has had on the production and promotion of nursing science by being named a 2022 Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame inductee.
Cathy Campbell (BSN 1986, MSN 2000, DNP 2004), associate professor of nursing and department chair at the University of Virginia School of Nursing, recently received the University of Virginia Health’s 2022 Martin Luther King Jr. Award, the health system’s biggest annual equity and inclusion award. She was one of four clinician-scholars to earn this award. Campbell is a hospice nurse, an end-of-life expert, a Buddhist chaplain (graduating from Upaya in 2019), and a Fulbright Global Scholar alumna.
Nancy Welch (BSN 1982) was named the 2022 Orange County Public Schools Teacher of the Year for her commitment to helping students become skilled and compassionate nurses.
Jade McBroom (BSN 2015) graduated in May from Emory University’s PhD program, with her dissertation work focusing on describing the postpartum retention in care and mortality of women living with HIV. McBroom used data from the Women Interagency HIV study, which is a multicenter observational cohort of cisgender women living in the United States. She was greatly aided in her research while working as a registered nurse at UF Health Jacksonville in the mother-baby unit.
Anastasia Albanese-O’Neill (BSN 2008, MSN 2013, PhD 2014) successfully fought for policy change through a class action lawsuit alongside the American Diabetes Association against New York City’s Department of Education, which addressed diabetic student exclusion from field trips due to a lack of nurse oversight during field trips. In the settlement, the federal court ordered the Department of Education to hire more nurses to provide coverage for field trips.
