A Message from the President
Alumni Council President Elaine Whidden reflects on a joyful spring.
Greetings, Gator Nurses!

During the last year, almost everyone said at one point or another: “I can’t wait for 2021 to be over and 2022 to get here.” I hope your 2022 has not disappointed! Though we have not achieved an environment free from COVID in its various forms, we are moving toward that day, step by step. Looking around me, I see much of this happened — and is happening — through Gator Nurses, working alone and with multiple disciplines. All of us are so proud of the efforts of our Gator graduates, students and faculty. We can take pride in the education we were given and especially in the education currently being delivered at the UF College of Nursing.
We were regretful that, once again, as a precaution due to high viral levels and illness, the Dorothy M. Smith Nursing Leadership Conference in February (Artificial Intelligence: Authentic Innovation) was held virtually. But what a conference! I joined over 400 virtual attendees in hearing from outstanding experts and speakers who pushed us to expand our thinking both in how we connect in various settings to achieve common goals, as well as how to understand our own inner values and wisdom in our art of nursing practice. The only thing missing was being together!
Giving Day in February was another great success! Thank you to everyone who participated at any level. Your efforts brought in $1,055,848 to support many areas in the College of Nursing. My personal thanks go to you — especially to Alumni Council members whose contributions help us to continue funding student book scholarships.
Cold weather in Gainesville at the beginning of the year had us looking forward to warmer days. We held our Alumni Council meeting in April on the weekend of the Orange and Blue game. We are planning our annual Reunion tailgate and silent auction with all alumni and friends this fall. I get excited thinking of everyone being back together again!
As things get back to normal, we are also planning to resume Gator Nurse Gatherings around different locations across Florida and the country. Look for announcements and let us know if you want to get together in your area. You don’t want to miss being together with fellow Gator Nurses and College of Nursing representatives.
I am trusting that 2022 will continue to be better for all. Gator Nurses, you encourage us as you continue in “all sorts of weather” to Care, Lead and Inspire!
Go Gator Nursing!
