Interdisciplinary Students Develop Innovative Solutions at Inaugural “Hack-A-Thon” Event

Students from across UF Health competed in an event hosted by the Florida Blue Center for Healthcare Quality.

On Oct. 16, students from the Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health & Health Professions gathered in the Health Professions, Nursing and Pharmacy complex auditorium, prepared to tackle health care needs in East Gainesville. Groups of students were assigned to one of four projects, which included:

Fare-less transportation with public transit

Nurse managed clinics - UF Health Archer Family Health Care - and mobile outreach clinics

Open-enrollment (Affordable Care Act)

UF Health urgent care center

Students worked in groups on their assigned topic the week leading up to the event to fully research and investigate how to address the topic using technology, education and policy. The day of the event, students finalized their presentations and presented their work to the judges. Faculty judges included Jane M. Carrington, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAMIA, Dorothy M. Smith Chair and director of the Florida Blue Center for Healthcare Quality; Amy Blue, PhD, associate vice president for interprofessional education
in the UF Health Office of the Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and clinical professor in the College of Public Health and Health Professions; and Richard Segal, RPh, PhD, MS, professor of pharmaceutical outcomes and policy in the UF College of Pharmacy.

Given its success, the Florida Blue Center plans to make this program an annual event, while expanding the student population to additional colleges across UF.

Rachel Rivera — Marketing and Communications Specialist

Rachel Rivera joined the University of Florida College of Nursing in 2020,  supporting communication and marketing efforts for the overall college, as well as advancement and alumni affairs. Prior to this position, she worked on the UF Health Communications team for six years. Her skills include developing communications and marketing materials, creating a broad array of multimedia material to advance strategic goals, crisis communications, developing and rolling out diverse communications plans and handling external media relations. She is a Double Gator and graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s in advertising with a concentration in psychology and a master’s in mass communications with a focus on digital strategy.
