The College of Nursing honors outstanding alumni who continue to uphold founding dean Dorothy Smith’s vision for nursing and health care. Leadership awards are given to those who stand out in some of the diverse areas of achievement in nursing that Dean Smith helped unite. The 2020 Dorothy M. Smith Nursing Leadership Awards were presented to the recipients at a special awards dinner the evening before the conference.
EXCELLENCE IN GLOBAL HEALTH
Rodney G.B. Clements, BSN, RN, CRNI, (BSN 1996) is co-founder of the Florida Africa Foundation, an organization that aims to improve access to health care and eliminate poverty in Africa through entrepreneurship by supporting sustainable, high-impact small businesses. Clements is also the owner/CEO of RN Enterprises Infusion Services Inc., which contracts with several national IV pharmacies and covers most of the state of Florida with six offices. He has made over 15,000 patient visits, providing home infusion therapy to pediatric and adult patients with complicated health issues.
EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY
Natalie M. Leblanc, PhD, MPH, BSN, RN, (BSN 2012) is an assistant professor in HIV prevention science and the Dean’s Endowed Fellow in Health Disparities at the University of Rochester School of Nursing. Leblanc began her career as a public health practitioner in both global and domestic community and health settings in the areas of communicable infectious disease prevention. She served in the Peace Corps in Northern Ghana, West Africa, and later as a technical assistant consultant in the Northern Region of Ghana.
EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

Gloria Pickar, EdD, MED, RN, (BSN 1968) has a diverse career in higher education and business, including as president and chief academic officer of the leading online learning services provider, Compass Knowledge Group. She also has 16 years of combined nursing faculty and program director experience at Valencia College and Seminole State College, where she launched and directed its first nursing program. Then she was the dean of the Open Campus at Seminole State College for 10 years before joining the business of online learning.
EXCELLENCE IN CREATIVITY

Mary Rockwood Lane, PhD, RN, FAAN, (PhD 1999, BSN 1977) is an associate professor at the UF College of Nursing and a core faculty member of the UF Center of Spirituality and Health. She is co-founder of the original UF Health Artist in Residence program at UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine and was co-director of the first nationally recognized hospital arts program. She was one of the founding faculty of the nonprofit foundation Watson Caring Science Institute with Dr. Jean Watson, and her passion is teaching caring, creativity and spirituality.
EXCELLENCE IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Carr Scott, MBA, BSN, (BSN 1996) is an entrepreneur specializing in health care informatics and technology. He started Poseidon Group in 1998 with a focus on emergency physician documentation on a web-based platform. In 2006, Scott and his business partners started Urgent Care Works, which automated documentation at urgent care centers. Since then, he founded Charles Sebastian Consulting, which is focused on start-ups and investing, advising and growing businesses.
